UNTITLED

I met you first just after school
Chris introduced us
That magic hitchhike to Tunbridge Wells
Lying stretched out for hours on the green
In those hazy lazy days of youth

With you I didn't need to drink
It wasn't so much choice, as law
That the friends I made all liked you too
It's just the way it was (for like Floyd said)
You were either one of us, or them

We had some good times, you and I
Almost always you were there
For years we were not once apart
A constant in a changing world
You ever present in my mind

You enticed me to such foreign lands
Nepal, Morocco, Afghanistan
It was over you
Two Spaniards scuffled in Seville
Two black guys scrabbled in New York

It has not all been simple bliss
I sometimes wish we'd never met
The hours I've wasted wanting you
The phone calls just to track you down
The useless forays round each home town

But you've seen me through my blackest days
I've eaten, smoked, and slept with you
I've watched you grow and cut you down
Bought you, given you away
Shared you, kept you for myself

You've caused me hassle
You've caused me pain
You've made me sick
You've made me dream
You've made me smile for twenty years

Old friend - with your many names.
